“Music, the greatest good that mortals know, and all of heaven we have
below.” John Addison
I have been a member of Cwm Male Choir since 1985, a decision I have hardly ever regretted. To sing to provide pleasure for oneself and for others is a gift that should not be squandered. Being part of a choir is a wonderful experience and is a continual learning process.
“Without music, life itself would be an error.” Friedrich Nietzsche
I was born in Kilwinning in Scotland in 1958 and was brought up in a mining community, very much like Cwm, a fact that probably drew me to Cwm from the outset.
I studied pharmacy at Strathclyde University in Glasgow and on qualifying decided to spread my wings. I moved to Cardiff in 1980 to pursue my career as a pharmacist and after fully qualifying, soon found myself working in the local pharmacy in Cwm. I moved to Cwm in 1982, and as stated before, joined the choir in 1985, after much persuasion.
"The best music... is essentially there to provide you something to face the world with." Bruce Springsteen
Thus began my life as a chorister. I joined the committee, became secretary and eventually took over as chairman, a position that I obviously still hold. To be involved with running the choir is a great challenge and of which brings immense satisfaction.
"He who sings scares away his woes." Cervantes
In this day and age, male voice choirs are in decline with numbers decreasing and few to replace them, but it is my hope that Cwm Male Choir will continue to thrive in the future. I cannot imagine my life without the choir.
Over the years I have had fantastic times with the choir and hope to have many more.
